Fort Orange

Fort Orange, originally constructed as a lodge in the 1670s by the Dutch on the Gold Coast. It was transformed into a trading post and fully fortified in 1704 following attacks from the Ahanta people in 1694. It stood beside the English-built Fort Sekondi (1682), highlighting the colonial competition of the era.
In 1872, the fort was transferred to British control along with the rest of the Dutch Gold Coast. Today, Fort Orange functions as a lighthouse and serves as a naval base for the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. Its role and historical importance earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
